Death Be Not Proud
by John Donne
(1572-1631)
DEATH be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadfull, for, thou art not so,
For, those, whom thou think’st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell’st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

Grateful for Grace
I’m truly sorry for your loss. I am grateful you were able to be there. We are never old enough to lose our mothers, though. I’m praying for you and all of your family.

I’ve been reading your blog since you left Portland & I don’t think I’ve ever commented. (I hope you don’t think that’s creepy.) But I had to write to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. From what you wrote she seems like a wonderful person — you made me wish I’d known her.

ps — your mom was just 3 years younger than my grandma, I think that is very cool. My grandma has been waiting for a long time for someone to talk with — she had lost all of her siblings and many of her friends. I do not think the timing is a coincidence. I think it is a small good thing.
